When Adam and I headed to Santa Barbara Wellness decline I hosted it earlier this month, and I knew it would be beautiful, but I didn’t expect how profound it would feel. Paraisopart of an amazing collection of six Spanish-style homes in Montecito designed by some very talented friends of mine. From the moment we arrived, surrounded by olive trees and golden light, I felt an exhalation I never knew I needed.
Between starting the day with a walk on the beach, strolling through the design shops of Summerland, and enjoying dinner that helped us slow down and savor, this trip was exactly the lively design reset that Santa Barbara does best. With its white plaster walls, red tile roofs, lush, dusty gardens, tall palm trees and slight European flair, it’s no wonder it’s been called the Spanish-American Riviera. This is my personal guide to the places I love most – where I can stay, eat, shop and enjoy the magic of California.
Where to stay in Santa Barbara
paraiso group, Montecito -We stayed here this trip, and it was absolutely perfect. The hotel’s six historic homes have been completely remodeled, each designed with a level of intent and luxury you rarely find in a rental. Think: arched doorways, natural textures, curated art, and airy indoor-outdoor living. It’s the kind of space that invites you to slow down, pour a glass of wine, and watch the sunset from the balcony.
Santa Ysidro RanchMontecito – The iconic bunker that seems to step into another era. Lush gardens, private cottages, and the faint scent of citrus in the air make it one of the most romantic stays in California. We celebrated Adam’s birthday here with dinner The Stonehouse-And it was as magical as you can imagine.
Hotel CaliforniaSanta Barbara – If you prefer to stay close to the city center, this boutique hotel blends Moroccan-inspired architecture with a modern twist, located steps from the waterfront and ideal for anyone who wants to walk to State Street and the Funk Zone.
Simpson house Featuring acres of manicured English gardens, this beautiful bed and breakfast is located within walking distance of Santa Barbara’s Arts and Culture District. There are 15 guest rooms in the main house, as well as elegant suites and cottages, each with a wood-burning fireplace.
El Capitan – These tents and cabins are no ordinary camping experience. Located just north of Santa Barbara and directly on the beach, El Capitan is the perfect accommodation and a great way to experience El Capitan Canyon. If you’re not ready to cook your own meals, head to the fresh and delicious Canyon Market and Deli. Perfect for a trip with kids!

The field + the fortSummerland -Our first morning stop and one of my favorites ever. It’s a hybrid café and home shop that looks like something out of a European village. The coffee is excellent, the avocado toast is piled high, and you can browse their beautifully curated collection of ceramics and linens while you wait.
Janine – Stop in for a classic, relaxing breakfast at this place that’s always packed with locals. With three locations, it’s easy to find a location near you!
Dangelos This cozy little bakery serves breads, pastries and other snacks with sidewalk seating.
Summerland Beach Cafe – A cozy, dog-friendly place perfect after a morning walk on the beach. Expect hearty breakfasts, strong coffee, and a front porch that feels right at home.

Lily Taqueria – This little-known taco shop is located at the far end of downtown and serves cheap, delicious and simple tacos.
Savoy – Convenient and full of fresh, healthy options, this café has been featured in restaurants, Drive-Ins, and Dives for good reason! After a stroll through State Street and downtown, we stopped for one of my favorite simple, healthy lunches.
Lilac sweets – One of my personal favorites, this gluten-free bakery and café is a gluten-intolerant person’s dream. We’re talking avocado toast, sandwiches made with amazing artisan bread, pies, pastries, cupcakes, and cheesecakes.
Santa Barbara Public Market – An upscale urban market with many different options, it is the perfect place to hang out and have a casual lunch.
Brophy brothers – For a lively, casual lunch or dinner, head to Brophy Brothers for fish and chips overlooking the water.

The Stonehouse at San Ysidro Ranch -We had Adam’s birthday dinner here, and it was unforgettable. Located on the hillside, surrounded by flowering gardens, this restaurant is the definition of romance. Seasonal California cuisine—like halibut with citrus, beurre blanc, and the best chocolate soufflé—makes it a true destination meal.
Lucita – Spanish-style tapas and handcrafted cocktails in a vibrant, contemporary design district downtown. The paella and patatas bravas are non-negotiable.
The harbour – An upscale seafood, breakfast and brunch spot on Hendry Beach with panoramic ocean views and a heated outdoor patio.
BettinaMontecito – A modern, neighborhood favorite pizzeria known for its wood-fired pizzas made with locally ground grains, beautiful salads, and natural wines. Go early and sit on the patio — it’s casual but effortlessly chic.
Fleur de Mais – A favorite waterfront restaurant that celebrates Oaxacan cuisine with a modern twist. Expect handcrafted tortillas, smoky mezcal cocktails, and dishes like zingy mole and grilled seafood that showcase local California ingredients through a Mexican lens. It’s lively, colorful and perfect for sunset dining.
Lucky – Classic steakhouse charm in Montecito. The perfect martini, oysters and a dose of old Hollywood energy.
The lark – A Santa Barbara institution serving up market dishes in the Funk District. The kind of place that feels loud and intimate, especially when dining outdoors under string lights.
The best beaches of Santa Barbara
Leadbeater Beach – Favorite place for beginners surfing lessons thanks to the easy and calm waves, my husband had his first surfing lesson here! There’s a great area with picnic tables and grills if you’re feeling a little outdoor cooking.
Hendry Beach – Very dog friendly and an easy walk to The Boathouse (mentioned above), this place is a locals favourite.
Butterfly Beach – Another local favourite, this is a popular spot on sunny days so it can be difficult to find parking. There aren’t a lot of amenities around, so be sure to pack a delicious picnic!
Things to do in Santa Barbara
Lotusland gana woksa – The most beautiful botanical garden. Be sure to check out their special tours held during the spring and summer.
Funk zone -The Funk Zone, located just a couple of blocks off the pier, has several great wine tasting rooms and is a great place to decide which wineries you want to visit if you’re planning a day in Santa Ynez. Enjoy al fresco dining and local wine and craft beer.
Hiking at Inspiration Point -This moderate hike is fairly short (3.5 miles roundtrip) and leads into the Santa Barbara foothills and ends with a great view of the city. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of downtown, the coast and perhaps even the Channel Islands. Pro Tip – Plan your trip so you end up at the summit at sunset. Mission – Founded in 1786, The Mission is one of Santa Barbara’s most historic and picturesque landmarks. You can tour the still-active church and explore the grounds – where you’ll see 17th-century art, re-creations of the Mission’s living quarters and kitchen, impressive architecture, and colorful gardens.
Santa Barbara Courthouse – With its Spanish Colonial style, elaborate hand-painted murals and stunning view from the top of the clock round, this is a must-see! Fun fact: Gwyneth Paltrow married Chris Martin here! Be sure to check the event schedule to see if there are An outdoor movie showing in the Courthouse’s Sunken Gardens. Film screenings are free and usually start around 8:30 p.m. Bring snacks, a jacket, and a cozy blanket!
Solvang – After a quick flight (35 miles north of San Francisco) and a beautiful drive through the mountains, you’ll find yourself in the gorgeous Danish-American capital. Enjoy and stop by the city’s many shops, bakeries, windmills and over 15 wine tasting rooms Copenhagen Sausage Garden For lunch!
Where to shop
the well, Summerland – A curated mix of home, garden, and lifestyle pieces that look like a fine piece of California design art. Hand-hammered pottery, antique wooden furniture, carved planters – everything here has a soul.
Montecito Country Mart and Coast Village Road -For upscale shopping that still feels easy, you’ll find Jenni Kayne, Mate the Label, and locally owned boutiques offering timeless fashion and homewares.
Arabat LibrarySummerland -My latest obsession. It’s small, soulful, and full of beautiful reads, magazines, and independent titles. They also serve excellent espresso, so it’s easy to waste an hour or two here.

Every time I come home from Santa Barbara, I feel refreshed. Maybe it’s the salty air, maybe it’s the design inspiration around every corner, or maybe it’s the way time seems to slow down enough for you to notice the beauty in the little things.
Whether you’re craving a creative reset, a romantic weekend getaway, or a wellness retreat, Santa Barbara has that rare way of giving you exactly what you didn’t know you needed. I can’t wait to go back, and when I do, you’ll find me between the farmers market and another long, slow dinner under the stars.
