We can’t get enough of Somsak SikhunmuongCreative Director of Alex Mel And probably the nicest person working in fashion today. (Fun fact: This CoJ post about Somsack was an inspiration Great salad!) Today, we’re excited to share a tour of his Queens apartment, where the rugs are layered, the art is leaning, and the windowsills are filled. “I have a lot of stuff,” he warned us, “but every piece reminds me of a trip I took or where I was in my career when I found it.” Here it goes…
living room

Coating: “Manchester Tan“By Benjamin Moore. Table: Paul McCobb via Modlivesup. sofa: ABC Carpet + Home. Standing lamp: Radiolum In bright orange. Pillows: “Who John Derian He travels to Hawaii, France and Italy. Textiles: “Vintage Finds from Portland, Tokyo and Paris.” Picture above the sofa: Jimmy Hawksworth.
On mixing methods: I like to mix industrial pieces with romantic things that have texture. If the room was all one or the other, it would be less interesting to me. This tension is good.

In beloved art: I’m an out and about kinda person. But when I’m at home, I spend my time alone, and 95% of the time I’m on the couch. The picture above is from before Jimmy Hawksworth. I bought it as a gift for myself after I got a big promotion at J.Crew.

Square rug: Cat + Mosh. Tripod standing lamp: Mark Hundley. Fabric on the table: Hawaiian quilt from Honolulu. White ceramic plate:my“.yellow vase: Gayle Spanaus.
In travel strategy: Before the trip, I will research a must-visit store that is off the beaten track. Then, once I get there, I’ll ask the shop owner for some of their local recommendations. This often opens up a bunch of cool places I never knew about, and it doesn’t require a lot of advance preparation.

Chair and console: Rite Off Happy medium. pillow: John Derian. pedestal: Matthias Friens.
On the non-green thumb: I’ve had a lot of plants, but the ones that are still here are the ones that don’t require a lot of water. The tree on the base was more lush – I always joke that it’s my version of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. My ritual with plants is that if I look at them and feel bad for them, I water them.

Left: Ceramics: “Mostly royalMarble fruit: John Derian. Right: Table: Mark Hundley“I think this beautiful little red table is the table of my memories.” Objects: “Found and presented, including a seal from Alaska.”
On a new hobby: I started making my own ceramics after Covid. I took some lessons on the wheel, but I was terrible. I left thinking, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Then I tried hand building and never looked back.

Picture on the left: Jimmy Hawksworth. Drawing on the ground: Jane Thompson. Wax seals in frame: eBay. Bullfighter jacket: eBay. Red metal shelving unit: similar.
On the collection: “I got this antique bullfighting jacket on eBay, and I love the beading and embroidery. Collected vintage clothes For decades, as well as old magazines and books. Pinterest is great, but you often see the same set of images over and over again. When you open an old book, none of those pictures are even on the Internet.
Food corner

Stool: BDDW. Tablecloth: Xenomania. Square rug: Cat + Mosh.
On the carpet On the carpet On the carpet: Over the years, I’ve brought home a lot of smaller rugs instead of one large rug. I like the layered look better, and honestly, under some rugs there are more rugs that I don’t have space to store anywhere else.

On a rescue mission: In fourth grade, our teacher had magazines that the students could cut and paste. My sister and I would rescue them and take them home because we thought they were too big to be cut. I don’t know why kids that age would think that, but we were. I now have every issue Vogue magazine Since 1995.
kitchen

printing press: Hugo Guinness. dish: Atelier Saint-Andre Perrin.
When shopping for one person: Someone needs to start a store that sells groceries to one person because I’ve never used all my parsley. If a recipe has more than five ingredients, I’ll probably skip it.

On important matters: What will I save in the fire? Maybe my passport and the little cards and photos on my refrigerator.
Bedroom

Coating: “Steel wool“By Benjamin Moore. Quilt: “Hawaiian Quilt from Honolulu.” Striped Blanket: Gift, similar. Cotton cushion cover: Muji, similar.
On good sleep: I sleep better in dark bedrooms, but I felt nervous painting my entire room dark. So, I painted one wall. That’s enough.

The lamp: from Cafeiro Select. Matchbox printing: Hugo Guinness. bat print: Derol. Nightstand: Custom from Shawn Belosky to Iron Oaks.
Art on Earth: Not all of my artwork hangs. Some of that is laziness, some of that is intentional. When you put something on the floor or stack it behind something else, you’re taking off the white gloves. It’s not messy, it’s just more casual. There are many ways to make a home look attractive, and this is one of them.

On dressing waaaay: Last year, a group of my coworkers and I dressed up in costume Marie Antoinette cakes For Halloween. We made our costumes in the office. Another year, I went to a party with a friend who had the same style. When we got there, we looked around, and it was like someone wearing cat ears and bobbing there with a fake nose. Meanwhile, we were gone everything“.
