Deportation Dr. Pliskin
A disgraced bank robber known simply as Hero (Nicolas Cage) is the reluctant protagonist. Prisoners of the Ghost Landis given a final mission of sorts when he is summoned by the Governor (Bill Moseley), the ruler of a samurai town inhabited by his sex slaves, whom he calls his granddaughters. When his most prized granddaughter, Bernice (Sofia Boutella), runs away from the compound with her two friends, Stella (Koto Lorena) and Nancy (Kanon Nawata), the governor sends the hero on a suicide mission to retrieve her.
Sent to the Land of Deadly Ghosts, an irradiated wasteland in which his former partner, Psycho (Nick Cassavetes), caused a prison bus to crash into a truck full of toxic waste, Hero is forced to wear a skin suit that ensures he completes his mission in time. With bombs strapped to his neck, arms, and testicles, Hiro has five days to find Bernice and bring her back. Any mistake in the form of her abuse would result in catastrophic injuries, while completing the task would supposedly earn him the ruler’s good graces and freedom from suit.
Trapped between the Governor’s men, a deranged psycho who still doesn’t understand the dangers, and the mutants living in Ghostland, the hero must tread carefully. Samurai violence lurks around every corner, endangering his mission from all directions.
It shouldn’t make sense, but somehow it all comes together
Prisoners of the Ghost Land It wins serious points for its style, blending the Wild West with the samurai aesthetic of the Beyond ThunderdomeType setting. The violence is cartoonish, the hero’s frustration reverberates throughout the wasteland in ways that only Nicolas Cage could achieve, and The Ruler feels like a delightfully deranged modern counterpart to Wild WestDr. Arliss Lovelace (Kenneth Branagh).
It’s a simple story of one last job that works because it leans into every post-apocalyptic trope imaginable without taking itself too seriously. Really, how can you take this movie seriously?
My favorite moment in Prisoners of the Ghost Land When Cage comes, in what seems like a deliberate callback to 1993 impassethreatening to karate chop his enemies before shouting “HI-F******-YAH!” For dramatic effect. Don’t even get me started on how he scarred his left testicle when it exploded after his explosive blade went bad. Somehow, he manages to become even more brutal when his arm explodes and he replaces it with a samurai sword to finish the job.
Pure post-apocalyptic gonzo
The best way to experiment Prisoners of the Ghost Land Not cash. It is too confusing to fit into a single category and impossible to evaluate by any standard metric. It exists solely to entertain through its visuals, its deliberately melodramatic dialogue, and its strangely honest performances. Treat it as a lively piece and you’ll have a great time. Look for a deeper meaning or award-worthy representation and you’ll come away disappointed.
