Creative company Canva launched its own design model on Thursday that understands today’s different layers and formats to power its features. The company also introduced new product models, updates to its AI assistant, and the ability to create sheets using its coding tool to create widgets for iterative insights.
Canva said it is launching its own foundational model, trained on its elements, that will create designs with layers and editable objects compared to a flat image. She said the model works across different formats, including social media posts, presentations, whiteboards and websites.
“We started by creating flat images using diffusion models. These Omni models took it a step further, where you could edit those flat images with a lot of complexity through prompting. But the tools made you work your way up to the final result, which is challenging for a visual medium,” Robert Kowalski, global head of product at Canva, told TechCrunch over a phone call.
“What we found is that what people want to get to is the ability to combine the idea of starting with a quick idea and going far, but also the ability to iterate directly on their own.”
Integrating more AI features into Canva
The company unveiled an AI assistant called Canva AI with a chat-like interface for creating new media elements using prompts earlier this year. The platform is now making this assistant available across screens, including design tabs and widgets.
Users can also mention the bot in the comments to get text or media suggestions while working on a project with others. In addition, the AI tool can now create 3D objects and allows you to copy the artistic style of the design.
Earlier this year, the company added a spreadsheet product and a feature that allows users to create applets through prompts. Now, these two products are linked, allowing users to leverage data stored in a spreadsheet and create widgets from that.

Canva also acquired An advertising analytics company called MagicBrief Earlier this year. Using its own creation platform along with a new measurement tool, Canva is launching an integrated marketing platform called Canva Grow, which uses AI to create assets and analytics. It also allows marketers to post their ads directly on platforms like Meta.
New products and features
Along with the AI features, the Australian design company has announced some new products and features for its platform. Users can now create forms with Canva to get different types of inputs from their clients or people instead of using Google Forms.
The company is also adding email design to the platform for users to create templates and layouts for marketing or package tracking emails that follow the brand’s aesthetics.

Canva acquired professional design tool Affinity last year to better compete with Adobe. With this release, the company said it will make the tool free for users forever.

Canva is also redesigning the Affinity interface to combine vector, pixel and layout understanding within a single interface. It tightly integrates Affinity to Canva so that designers can create objects in the professional tool and transfer them to the latter. Users can also leverage Canva AI to create images or designs within Affinity, the company said.
