A VPN is useful in many ways – a good one can stream foreign TV shows and events, save you from giving away information to hackers and keep you anonymous to protect against online tracking. Although we highly recommend a VPN, a little comparison shopping goes a long way in this market. VPN prices can be murky, and providers don’t always accurately portray their best deals.
However, there are already big deals on the table. VPN providers offer deep discounts to customers who sign up for a year or more at a time. This allows them to grow their subscriber numbers, but it’s also a win-win for you – while you pay more upfront, if you spread the cost over months of service, it will be much cheaper over time.
Most of the deals we highlight below follow this pattern, so make sure you’re comfortable with a longer commitment before you take the plunge. If you’re thinking about subscribing to a VPN service, read on for the best VPN deals we can find right now.
Best VPN Deals
NordVPN Basic – $80.73 for two-year subscription with three months free (74 percent off): NordVPN gets the most important parts of a VPN right. It’s fast, doesn’t leak any of your data and is great for changing your virtual location. I noted in my review of NordVPN that it always connects quickly and includes a support page that makes it easy to get live help. Although I’m sad to see Meshnet shut down, NordVPN still includes a lot of great features, like servers that connect you to Tor instantly. The early Black Friday deal gives you a 74 percent discount on the two-year plan, which also comes with an additional three months.
NordVPN Plus – $105.03 for two-year subscription with three months free (74 percent off): And in another early Black Friday discount, NordVPN also took a 74 percent discount on its Plus subscription. For a little extra, you can get a powerful ad and tracking blocker that can also detect malware downloads, as well as access to the NordPass password manager. The Plus plan also adds a data breach scanner that scans the dark web for your sensitive information.
ExpressVPN Basic – $97.72 for two-year subscription with four months free (73 percent off): It is one of the best VPNs, especially for new users, who will find its apps and website hassle-free on all platforms. In tests for my ExpressVPN review, my download speeds dropped less than 7 percent and I successfully changed my default location 14 out of 15 times. “In short, it’s an excellent all-round service that only suffers from being a bit pricey – which is why I’m thrilled whenever I find them offering a decent deal. This deal, which gets you 28 months of ExpressVPN service, represents a saving of 73 percent.
ExpressVPN Advanced – $125.72 for two-year subscription with four months free (67 percent off): ExpressVPN recently split its pricing into multiple tiers, but they all still come with similar long-term discounts. In addition to the top-tier VPN service, advanced users get two additional simultaneous connections (12 connections total), ExpressVPN Keys password manager, advanced ad and tracker blocking, identity protection features, and a 50 percent discount on the AirCove router.
Surfshark Starter – $53.73 for a two-year subscription with three months free (87 percent off): This is the “basic” level of Surfshark, but it includes the entire VPN network; Everything about Surfshark One is a plus. With this subscription, you’ll get some of the most exciting features in the VPN world right now. Surfshark has a more closely connected network of servers than most VPNs, so it can constantly rotate your IP address to help you avoid detection — and it even lets you choose your ingress and egress nodes for a double-hop connection. All of this comes with an almost invisible impact on your download speeds. With this year-round deal, you can save 87 percent on 27 months of Surfshark.
Surfshark One – $59.13 for a two-year subscription with three months free (88 percent off): A VPN is great, but it’s not enough to protect all your data on its own. Surfshark One adds several apps that boost your security beyond just a VPN service, including Surfshark Antivirus (scans devices and downloads malware) and Surfshark Alert (alerts you when your sensitive information comes up in the event of a data breach), as well as Surfshark Search and the previous tier Alternate ID. This super low deal gives you 88 percent off all of these features. If you move up to the Surfshark One+, you’ll also get data removal with incognito mode, but the price jumps enough that it’s not worthwhile in my opinion.
CyberGhost – $56.94 for a two-year subscription with two months free (83 percent off): CyberGhost has some of the best automation you’ll see on any VPN. Thanks to a system of smart rules, you can specify how its apps respond to different types of Wi-Fi networks, with exceptions for certain networks you know by name. Usually, you can set it to automatically connect, disconnect, or send you a message asking what to do. Another best feature of CyberGhost is its streaming servers — although it’s not entirely clear what they do to improve them, I’ve found better video quality and more consistent unblocking when I use them on streaming sites. Right now, you can get CyberGhost for 26 months for 83 percent off the regular price.
Private Internet Access – $79 for a three-year subscription with three months free (83 percent off): It’s a bit hard to find (the link at the beginning of this paragraph includes the coupon), but Private Internet Access (PIA) offers the best price available right now on a VPN that I recommend using. With this deal, you can get 39 months of PIA for just over $2 per month — an 83 percent discount on its monthly price. Although very cheap, PIA has a lot of features, coming with its own DNS servers, built-in ad blocker and automation powers to rival CyberGhost. However, internet speeds can fluctuate while you are connected.
Hide.me — $69.95 for a two-year subscription with two months free (73 percent off): Hide.me is an excellent free VPN – in fact, it’s my favorite on the market, even with competition from EventVPN and the free version of Proton VPN. However, if you want to upgrade to its paid plan, the two-year subscription offers a significant saving. Hide.me works well as a no-frills entry-level VPN, with apps and a server network that frankly should charge extra for it.
What makes a good VPN deal
As I said in the introduction, practically every VPN significantly reduces its long-term subscriptions throughout the year. The one noteworthy exception is Mullvad, Costco’s best VPNs (that’s a compliment, to be clear). When there’s constantly a big discount, it can be hard to know when you’re actually getting a good deal. The best way to make more savings is to look for seasonal deals, student discounts or exclusive sales such as Proton VPN coupon for Engadget readers.
One trick VPNs often use is to add additional months to the introductory deal, bringing the average monthly price down even further. When it’s time to renew, you usually can’t get those extra months back. Often you can’t even renew for the same basic period of time – for example, you may only be able to renew a two-year subscription for one year. If you plan to keep the VPN indefinitely, check the fine print to see how much it will cost per month after the first renewal, and make sure that fits your budget.
