Apple’s market value reaches $4 trillion

Apple has become the third company to have a market capitalization exceeding $4 trillion, confirming its role as one of the leading publicly traded technology companies and making it the second most valuable company in the world. The company’s shares briefly topped $269.53 shortly after trading began Tuesday, putting it above that milestone.

Apple was the first company to reach $1 trillion, $2 trillion, and $3 trillion in market caps. But Nvidia exceeded it to $4 trillion, against the backdrop of increasing investor interest in artificial intelligence. This company’s impressive chip sales have boosted its shares by more than 400% since October 2023.

Apple’s march to $4 trillion began in earnest on October 20, when Loop Capital raised its rating from “hold” to “buy,” citing improving demand for the iPhone. In a note to investors, the company wrote: “So are we.” now On the front end of AAPL’s long-awaited certification cycle that signals continued expansion of iPhone shipping through CY2027. The stock hit an all-time high after that upgrade.

Nvidia appears to be the new market leader and is on track to be the first to reach $5 trillion. But from the dizzying heights of Big Tech, things are changing fast. Microsoft, for example, was the second company to reach $4 trillion in market cap, topping it on July 30, after posting strong profits. But it lost ground, causing its market value to fall below Apple’s for a while. (Microsoft rose above that milestone again on Tuesday as well.)Â

Trillion-dollar landmarks have no specific value in and of themselves. However, they are clear indicators that companies are growing at impressive rates (assuming they maintain those levels). The first company ever to reach $1 trillion was PetroChina, which briefly reached the valuation on the first day of trading after its IPO in 2007. But that peak coincided with China’s stock market bubble and was short-lived. Today PetroChina is worth nearly a quarter of that.

Apple’s rise to the $4 trillion club is a marked shift from earlier this year, when analysts were less optimistic as the company struggled to keep up with its rivals. Apple has also faced tariff-based manufacturing issues in China and India.

However, year-to-date, the company’s shares are up nearly 10%. Demand for the latest iPhones showed that despite this year’s economic froth, widespread recession threats, and tariff concerns, consumers are still willing to buy top-tier devices. (The high-end iPhone 17 Pro now starts at $1,099, which is $100 more than the previous year’s model.)

Additionally, the base model of the iPhone 17 sold well in China, while the iPhone Air sold out when it went on sale in that country. Lead times for iPhone 17 orders are also longer than they were a year ago, underscoring strong and continued demand from consumers.

Perhaps what’s most striking about Apple reaching the $4 trillion club is that it did so without using real artificial intelligence. (Its AI efforts have so far not impressed anyone, including the company.) In January, Apple suspended news summary notifications from Apple Intelligence after users criticized it for repeated errors.

The company is expected to launch the long-awaited AI-enhanced Siri app in the spring of 2026, assuming it meets the company’s standards. This could be another incentive for investors that gives Apple stock (and market cap) another boost.

However, the upshot for Apple of surpassing this milestone is that for investors and consumers, new hardware and improved features are, right now, more important than AI.
