US is betting on AMD to ‘leverage’ nuclear power, defense and drug discovery – Fast Company

The US Department of Energy has struck a $1 billion deal with Advanced Micro Systems (AMD) to build two supercomputers with unprecedented power to advance scientific advances ranging from nuclear power to the development of cancer treatments.
The partnership, was first reported by Reuters On Monday, the US government is set to ensure that the US government has the computing power needed to absorb massive amounts of data – and can provide about three times the artificial intelligence power of today’s supercomputers. Artificial intelligence-powered supercomputers could be deployed to boost nuclear power and replicate fusion – the process that powers the sun and generates vast amounts of energy.
Upcoming AI supercomputers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will be part of a new public-private partnership model. To help extend U.S. leadership in scientific computing, strengthen national security, and advance the next generation of science and innovation.
US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said in a speech: “Winning the AI race requires new and innovative partnerships that bring together the brightest minds and industries that American technology and science have to offer.” statement.
AMD shares rose nearly 1% in midday trading on Monday. The semiconductor maker’s shares have doubled in value this year, and the company recently struck a partnership to supply its chips to OpenAI to build its AI infrastructure.
Supercomputer timelines
Wright told Reuters that the prospective supercomputers could be used to advance advances in defense and national security technologies, including helping the US government manage its nuclear weapons arsenal, along with accelerating the discovery of drugs to treat cancer. “I hope that in the next five or eight years we can turn most cancers, many of which today are death sentences, into controllable conditions.”
The first of the two supercomputers to be deployed will be the Lux AI range, based on AMD’s MI355X AI chips and the company’s central processing units (CPUs) and networking chips. Jointly developed by AMD, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and ORNL, the supercomputer will serve as “the first U.S. factory dedicated to AI for science,” AMD said in a press conference. statement.Â
Once operational in early 2026, the LUX program will help the United States expand the Department of Energy’s AI capacity in the near term and accelerate work on critical national priorities that include fusion, fission, materials discovery, quantum, advanced manufacturing, and grid modernization, according to the government.
She told Reuters that the Lux timeline would represent the fastest deployment of this size of a supercomputer that AMD CEO Lisa Su has ever seen. “That’s the speed and agility that we wanted to (do) this for the US AI effort.”
The second, more advanced supercomputer, called Discovery, will have a longer timeline for completion and is expected to be ready for operations sometime in 2028. Discovery will be an HPE system powered by AMD processors and is accelerating and its performance will far exceed Frontier, which is currently the world’s second-largest supercomputer and is also at ORNL, the department said in a statement.
Thanks to this enhanced performance, scientists will be able to generate, process and analyze data at record speeds, which could reduce discovery cycles from years to weeks, the ministry said. In turn, this could lead to new advances in medicine, energy, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing.
“With Discovery and Lux, we are delivering groundbreaking computing systems that combine performance and energy efficiency to advance America’s research priorities and advance American leadership in artificial intelligence, energy, and national security,” Su said in a statement.
