Seattle is hiring an artificial intelligence officer to guide how technology improves city operations, partnerships and more

The City of Seattle is interviewing candidates for the position of City Artificial Intelligence Officer to lead how AI is used across departments and offices.

The new position aligns with the city’s recent release of its “Responsible AI Plan,” which provides guidance for Seattle’s use of AI and its support of the AI ​​technology sector as an economic driver.

The CAIO will report to Rob Lloydthe city’s chief technology officer, who said Post the job It attracted 3,000 visits in its first week on air. Of the nearly 40 highly qualified applicants, nine were invited to interview, with backgrounds ranging from the private sector, federal government, and academia.

The “highly competitive” pool of applicants also includes a few former Microsoft employees, said Lloyd, who started as CTO last year. The rental should be in place by next week.

“We created the city’s AI plan (because) there are too many things going on with AI for the organization to be effective at that,” Lloyd told GeekWire. “We have identified two areas of activity in which we must succeed.”

CAIO will manage these domains, including:

• Technical excellence and coordination: The city’s AI plan ensures that infrastructure, programming, data and process engineering are aligned within a coordinated strategy. Lloyd said success depends on an “elite-level AI expert” to oversee frameworks, technology and training.
• Responsible learning, skill and accreditation: With 39 departments, the city must build a common understanding of the use of AI. The focus is on preventing “AI product proliferation” and aligning solutions with city priorities — such as budget directives and executive orders — while improving AI knowledge, consistent terminology, and awareness of the impact of AI on workflows and people.
• Partnerships and community activation: The plan links internal AI efforts with academia, startups, and local organizations to strengthen Seattle’s AI ecosystem. Lloyd said that by enhancing cooperation and mutual understanding around AI safety and innovation, the city is strengthening its capabilities and role as a responsible community partner.

The use of artificial intelligence has the potential to reshape the number of city departments that do their job and serve residents. Lloyd noted that AI adoption is already underway at the Seattle Department of Transportation, where AI and game theory are being used to analyze areas with higher accident rates, find patterns and anomalies in reports, and help speed up design choices so safe intersections can be designed.

Public utilities, public safety and permitting are also ripe for AI disruption, but the approach is to augment human workers, not automate and replace them, Lloyd said.

“There’s a lot of room we can look at where staffing is overburdened,” he said. “We haven’t reached the level of responsiveness that we aspire to, and there are areas where we want to make smarter, faster decisions. We can use AI and focus on those things, not to replace jobs, but to get to the levels of service and decision-making that we want to create.”

Seattle has been a leader in developing guidelines for the use of AI, and claims to be the first in the country to issue a generative AI policy in the fall of 2023. Policies It requires “human” oversight, whereby employees must review generative AI output before formal use and assign any AI-powered work to the specific technology.

When it comes to the new AI chief and the AI ​​plan, Lloyd emphasized the importance of “making sure we focus on our values ​​and how we apply AI in the organization and society.”

The annual salary for the CAIO role ranges between $125,000 and $188,000, according to the job posting.

Whoever gets the job will join a city government willing and able to work with a number of local “assets,” as Lloyd called them, including the University of Washington, AI House, AI2, Plug & Play, and others.

“We are the second largest center for AI talent,” he said. “It would be really sad if we don’t take advantage of this opportunity and play with this intensity.”
