The greatest piece of American propaganda ever made is also the best action movie ever to hit theaters. Top Gun It is a Cold War-era film that asserts that America is the greatest country in the world because of two things: our advanced fighter planes and the villains who fly them.
It’s Tom Cruise’s career-best performance, and you can experience his character’s legendary need for speed by streaming this movie on Hulu.
Right in the danger zone

hypothesis Top Gun is that an accomplished naval aviator is sent to an elite school designed to train the best of the best. There, our cocky air jockey clashes with rival pilots and falls in love with a breathtaking instructor. But unless he can overcome past and present traumas, this pilot may disappear before he can return to the skies and do what he does best: protect American airspace from Russian pilots who are desperate to turn the Cold War into something decidedly hotter.
Talk about “hotter.” Top Gun Full of great actors, including Val Kilmer (aka Doors) as a rival pilot who gives the arrogant protagonist a run for his money. Meanwhile, Anthony Edwards (best known for the TV show er) plays our hero’s friend, a radar intercept officer and family man who is married to a character played by Meg Ryan (known as When Harry Met Sally). Michael Ironside (famous for… Starship troopers) plays a difficult flight instructor, while Kelly McGillis (famous for… a witness) plays a different type of coach, who forms our main character very Hot for the teacher.
Tom Cruise’s best movie, and it’s not even close

All these artists give it their all, but no one captivates Top Gun Like Tom Cruise, who has an undeniable charisma more powerful than any of the thrilling battles in this film. Cruise’s charm helps dissolve what could be the rough edges of a character full of passion and desire, an absolute identity that is as likely to set someone up as to kill them. The actor’s chemistry with everyone on screen turns him into the archetype of American cinema: every man wants to be him, and every woman wants to be with him!
when Top Gun Hitting theaters, it wasn’t just the Tower; Instead, it took everyone’s breath away. For a budget of just $15 million, director Tony Scott’s action epic grossed $357.4 million, cementing actor Tom Cruise’s status as one of Hollywood’s most popular stars. It’s a reputation he enjoys to this day, and in 2022, Cruise reprized his iconic role in Top Gun: Maverickone of the few cinematic revivals that was adored by audiences and critics alike.
But somewhat incredibly, critics were mostly unbothered by the original Top Gun: On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 59 percent, just short of the coveted “fresh” rating. Critics mostly complained that the film’s characters were too two-dimensional, essentially forcing the audience to focus on the action. While they somewhat reluctantly admitted that the perfectly shot aerial shots make the jet fight scenes really exciting, critics generally felt like… Top Gun It brings nothing to the table other than gonzo action sequences and (ahem) a maverick sense of joyful abandon.
Top Gun gets top awards

Despite this widespread critical slaying (even Roger Ebert complained about the poor characterization, giving the film only 2.5 stars!) Top Gun He won a number of prestigious awards, including a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award for the original song “Take My Breath Away.” Speaking of music, the film also received a Grammy Award for “Top Gun Anthem.” And those accolades are well-deserved, too: from its elegantly austere title song to its sultry, romantic pop masterpiece. Top Gun It is a film filled with great music just as the film is filled with long shots of shirtless men.
Honestly, the critics who inexplicably hated this movie really missed the mark… like, sure, Top Gun truly He is A movie full of two-dimensional characters, but that’s the point of a good action movie. No one listens to a movie from the 1980s about America attacking Russia because they want a deep description or a strong moral story. No, we want to see the good guys and the good guys put the bad guys in their place and get the girl, and Top Gun He certainly delivers the goods in a film of pure patriotic perfection.
Would you agree to that? Top Gun Is it the ultimate love letter to 1980s America, or do you want to throw this bit of fun propaganda into the ocean? The only way to find out is to fire up the engines of your remote and travel to Hulu to check it out for yourself. Fair warning: You’ll likely find yourself humming this film’s award-winning music for the rest of the week, or maybe for the rest of your life!
