We live in an age where it has become easier for people to live lives completely disconnected from any semblance of reality. Conspiracy theories are rampant, science denial is in vogue, and there is a vast media ecosystem full of charlatans who encourage others to “Do their own researchInstead of believing well-educated experts. It can be hard to see anything funny in a world where capitalist forces often seem intent on rapidly pushing society into a new dark age of anti-intellectualism. but Bugonia – Yorgos Lanthimos’s new version of the film by South Korean director Jang Joon-hwan. Save the green planet! – is a brilliant example of why, sometimes, you just have to laugh at how crap things are right now.
Nevertheless Bugonia It sticks very closely to the original story from which it was adapted, and the new film changes details only It’s enough to make it seem as if Lanthimos and screenwriter Will Tracy have crafted a uniquely American story about the dangerous appeal of conspiracy theories. The shape of the feature changes impressively, parasite– A nimbleness that keeps each of the narrative modes – comedy, body horror, and psychological thriller – in constant focus. Just when you think so Bugonia It couldn’t get any harsher or sadder, as its story sinks to new depths of nauseating dread. But despite all its darkness, Bugonia He’s also very funny, and his lead performance is nothing short of phenomenal.
The film’s events take place in a small American town affected by the opioid crisis. Bugonia The film revolves around disgruntled fulfillment center worker Teddy Gatz (Jesse Plemons). Like many of his neighbors, Teddy spends his days toiling for a giant corporation that views its employees as faceless cogs rather than people with hopes and dreams. Teddy prefers to spend his time tending to the small bee farm in his backyard, but he needs to work every hour to take care of Don (Aidan Delpiss), his trusted cousin. Life is simple and dreary for the couple, who live together in a dilapidated house near a forest near the outskirts of the city. But Teddy – a conspiracy theorist who spends hours sniffing out disturbing YouTube videos – has a plan to change their lives.
It’s hard for Don to understand Teddy’s rant about pharmaceutical CEO Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone) being a disguised alien from the Andromeda galaxy. But Don loves his cousin, which makes it easy for him to accept strange diatribes. As Teddy tells it, Michelle is actually an emissary sent to Earth on a mission to destroy humanity by wiping out the planet’s population of pollinating bees. And Teddy is certain that if he and Don kidnap Michelle and chain her in their basement, they can convince her to arrange a meeting with her Emperor during the upcoming lunar eclipse.
Teddy is clearly seriously ill as he explains how shaving Michelle’s hair and covering her body in pharmacy ointment are necessary steps to prevent her from contacting her mother ship and confusing her captors with powerful alien pheromones. but Bugonia It spends much of its running time exploring the kinds of things that make it possible for people to become disconnected from reality. The film introduces both Teddy and Don – a duo whose dynamic strongly reflects elements of Steinbeck’s character. Of mice and men – As examples of ordinary men who feel abandoned by society needs A unique character to project their fears and anger onto because the structural forces that have marginalized them are truly too great for us to understand.
In contrast to Plemons, who brings Teddy to life with a moody, moody melancholy, Stone inhabits her character with a media-rehearsed intensity that makes you understand how someone could see her as a monstrous person. Teddy’s insistence that he has enough experience hunting and dissecting “aliens” to know that Michelle is lying about being human is troubling on the face of it. But Stone plays her role with such decisive (and captivating) integrity that she soon leaves you wondering if she actually has something to hide from her cousins.

Especially during one of Stone’s early monologues where she explains how the public might respond to a high-ranking pharmaceutical executive or conservative who suddenly disappears, Bugonia It seems at least partly like a commentary Inspired by recent real world events. The Cousins aren’t total vaccine deniers, but Teddy believes they need to take special medications to prevent others from messing with their minds.
Bugonia The thematic absurdity of what is happening is constantly highlighted by lingering shots of a bald stone smeared with ointment designed to resemble Max Schreck’s Count Orlok, and countdown title cards that gradually depict the Earth as a flattened circle swirling in space. But the same silliness and a surprising amount of well-placed slapstick help the film play as a comedy — even when Teddy’s plan takes a more horrifying and convoluted turn.
It feels a bit wrong to call Bugonia It’s a fun ride, but if you have a stomach for gruesome events and want to feel tense, the film will do the trick.
Bugonia Stavros Halkias, Alicia Silverstone and Cedric Dumornay also star. The film is available now in select theaters and will have a wider release on October 31.
